SELMA: Hacking Hate Speech Online
Date and time
Location
Balshaw's C of E High School
Church Road Leyland PR25 3AH United KingdomDescription
Online hate speech is a growing problem. Education is part of the solution.
SELMA (Social and Emotional Learning for Mutual Awareness) is a two-year project that aims to tackle the problem of online hate speech using Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), media literacy and citizenship education approaches to empower young people to become agents of change.
Lancashire Safeguarding Boards are delighted to host our colleagues from the South West Grid for Learning in offering this exclusive, one-off session which will introduce and explore the SELMA Toolkit. The toolkit includes over 100 free, easy-to-access and customisable resources including flexible, hands-on activities which attendees can run as one-off sessions to trigger immediate engagement and effect. By promoting mutual awareness, tolerance and respect, the SELMA Toolkit offers an interactive set of tools and materials to support young people to understand what hate speech is and how it affects them and those around them.
This event is for school staff and other professionals (e.g. police officers, social workers, youth workers) across the Lancashire region working with young people aged 11-16.
The session is free-to-attend, lasting for 1 hour and will begin promptly at 3.10 pm. Limited places are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
